This all started with intense headaches around my temples. Sure, several years ago I had lost a substantial amount of weight without changing my diet or exercise routines, and I was constantly thirsty, but none of that felt like a “symptom.” I suffered through the headaches for a week, purchasing extra strength acetaminophen on the second day. When the headaches failed to subside I dug through my unopened mail looking for my health insurance documents and scheduled a doctor appointment in the middle of the 2020 pandemic. I had a blood and urine panel run after the appointment, and sparing all the technical details I was diagnosed as diabetic. I was immediately put on medication and was instructed to make some dietary and lifestyle changes.

I decided to purchase a bicycle to increase my exercise levels. I have the fortune of being an “essential worker,” and the good fortune of working within 2.5 miles of where I live for a good percentage of my job. I now try to cycle to and from work at least twice a week. I consume less carbohydrates and processed sugars. I poke my finger tips twice a day to test my blood-sugar levels. I also see the doctor more often than once every 15 years. That’s all for now.
