May 2026 Japan Trip Day 4

On this fine morning we walked our way to the neighboring Asakusa area, home of Sensoji Temple, the oldest in all of Tokyo proper. It was very crowded, so I decided to pivot from going in and doing a traditional prayer and picking up some charms to exploring the surrounding area and looking for street food stalls. I was also influenced to pick up a pair of Japan Blue Jeans. I was intrigued to experience the artisan quality denim Japan has become known for with a light-weight innovated twist. The jeans really do feel light-weight! I did not get a photo of the Jeans pre-hemmed and washed so maybe you’ll see me around in them.

We moved on from the busy temple area to the kappabashi kitchen town street. I had the intention of shopping around for some Omiyage, but I was able to cross another item off of my personal shopping list: a fan-cooling jacket that Jei spotted at a corner-store. I was also influenced on this purchase by seeing social media posts of how Japan’s outdoor working class deals with their hot and humid summers. My current occupation involves walking all-over Waikiki in the hot sun for the first half of my week, so the jacket has been very useful! The battery easily lasts 2.5 shifts. I felt pretty broke afterwards, so I ceased shopping for the moment. We moved on from here with a walk to Tokyo Skytree and Tokyo Solamachi.

The walk felt a bit longer than we anticipated, so we made a few pitstops; the first at the bakery in the first picture, and the second at the Asahi Beer Hall for some refreshments. Originally, our plan was to shop around, then eat at Solairo and enjoy the free views of the Skytree Tower. The restaurant was closed between the hours of 3pm and 5pm, however, so instead of waiting around, we walked back to the hotel to recover.

In the spirit of eating something different each night, I looked for sushi in the nearby area using the tabelog ratings and found Sugidama. Like all things in Japan, this sushi restaurant did not disappoint! We ended the day with 26,000+ steps! And with that, we were on to the next.
